SUMMARY of the TALK

TENDING TO THE HIDDEN ROOTS
What emotional eating is and how to stop
This class teaches you a powerful technique I use to uncover the emotional drivers that trigger compulsive eating.

General Structure of class:
  • background on me and this technique and tapping
  • demonstration of technique
  • final teaching points for how to take this technique and turn it into lasting transformation

I could go on and on about this work, and about these topics. There's so much nuance. I love to dig into all the layers, but I want to be respectful of your time and give you the core pieces so that you can really go away from this talk with a deeper understanding of emotional eating and how to be free of it AND I promise at the end of the call I will show you how you can take it further if you’d like to take it further.

My name is Makayla McDonald and I'm the owner of Food Peace Body Love.
  • I'm a Certified Brittany Watkins Method Coach, Faster EFT level 1 coach. I've done trainings in NLP, EFT, and more.
    • I went through Brittany Watkin's courses intensively for 1.5 years and became a certified coach in her methods
    • I've been coaching for Brittany since 2016, and I've been coaching since 2015.
    • I've invested tens of thousands of dollars on trainings and I like to think that I've synthesized the best of the best for you!
    • I studied food systems, yoga, and somatic psychology in my undergraduate degree. The relationship between the mind and body and food is fascinating to me.

I help women who:
  • know what to do (how to eat, workout, etc.) but just can't seem to do it or follow through.
  • Women who emotionally eat and self-sabotage their health and fitness goals.
  • And women who feel bad about their bodies.

My process:
  • Identify the behaviors that are sabotaging your success:
    • overeating, emotional eating, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, lack of self care, etc.
  • Address the roots and drivers of those behaviors:
    • using techniques like the one we cover in this call!
  • Establish new habits and behaviors based on congruent self-love and self-care:
    • filling up on the good feelings first; eat well, move well out of self-love.
    • there are lots of yummy practices to do to infuse your life with more love and care. I teach some in this class!

This is the right class for you if:
  • you use food to numb out, to celebrate, to distract, to de-stress, to relax, to reward yourself, or if you just eat too much!
  • you are caught in the dieting cycle of hope and despair
  • you secretly obsess about your weight and don't know what to do about it
  • you want a deeper shift, a deeper healing

Guess what: it IS possible to have a peaceful relationship with food.

Before we dive in to the demonstration - I want to give you some background on me, my journey, and how I got here.

About me:
  • I have tried so many things to make my body be fit, healthy, beautiful and slim.
  • Between watching my mom diet and the diets I did starting at 13, I've either done or witnessed almost every diet and "program" for weightloss.
  • I love learning, and always have, and I've applied my thoroughness and student mindset to the topic of weight and food.
  • After watching my mother struggle with her weight for my whole life (until recently!) I kew I wanted deep and thorough healing. I wanted to address this issue at a core level.
    • It wasn't until 2012 when I realized that all my obsessing about food and health was just a veil over the reality: I was an emotional eater who regularly binged on desserts, who didn't like her body, who felt insecure, and who felt desperate to lose weight and be "normal"
    • I remember the turning point - standing in line buying food - where I had stood so many times with my ice cream, cake, pop corn, and chocolate and lied to the cashier about having a "girl's night". But this time was different. This time, I was with my friend. They were buying various desserts and chips and looked the cashier in the eye and playfully said: I'm going home and eating all of this. I was amazed! My friend wasn't hiding it! It was out! And the cashier was playful back. It was ok to acknowledge this behavior.  Once I realized that I was an emotional eater, I was able to address the issue and get the help I needed.

What is emotional eating and how to stop:
  • Emotional eating is a coping mechanism or escapism.
    • The behavior is to try and get a need met: to create more pleasure, or create relief or distraction from pain.
    • We learn behaviors from what's modeled to us by the people in our life (family and peers) and by the culture. We do what works - and often times emotional eating worked (or works) really well in the short term, but it's not comprehensively helpful and it's not getting the root need met.
  • What drives the behavior is our subconscious mind and the associations therein.
    • Traditional talk therapy - (which I totally value) is great at revealing what's going on. And awareness is intrinsically healing - to a point. This work is different, because we are actually going in and shifting the deeper symbolic structures (of your subconscious mind).
    • There can be lots of roots, and sometimes they are hard to see. In my practice, I think of myself as a guide for people on their hero's journeys, helping to guide you to the roots that need attention. When we address the roots of a behavior it is possible to shift out of out-dated behavior patterns and beliefs and into a place of greater congruence and power.
  • We address the drivers of our unwanted behavior by addressing the subconscious mind and the roots of the behavior.
    • There are many techniques (I've tried many!) and tapping - esp. Echo Tapping (which includes eft, visualization, and nlp) is my favorite way for addressing the roots of behaviors.
    • The behavior pattern of emotional eating is linked to an internal structure and that structure can dissolve by addressing the of the roots. We don't have to attend to every leaf, we can just attend to the roots (a few core memories or core beliefs) and the rest falls away.

DEMONSTRATION: (I recommend watching the video above to get the full experience of this)
  • Good to know: tapping has this phenomenon called Borrowed Benefits where you can benefit from tapping along with someone else's issues even if they aren't exactly like yours!! EFT founder Gary Craig explains here: https://youtu.be/Hf5MnKrBstw
  • Review the tapping points: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-WJUe670YQ
  • Dive into the video where the demonstration starts: https://youtu.be/EapDmHvqWWA?t=24m40s
  • Echo tapping uses the pain the you may feel about an emotional eating episode as an entry point into the root drivers behind the behavior. You can tap along with this demo!

CONCLUSION:
  • How you can take today’s info and turn it into lasting transformation is by following the steps of my system. Whether you do it alone or with me, you can take this process further if you choose!
    1. Identify the behaviors that are sabotaging your success:
      • overeating, emotional eating, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, lack of self care, etc.
    2. Address the roots and drivers of those behaviors:
      • You can use this recording to do the Echo tapping technique on the various pain points that are linked to the behaviors that don't serve you.
    3. Establish new habits and behaviors based on congruent self-love and self-care:
      • filling up on the good feelings first; eat well, move well out of self-love.
      • IE: sit with your self as a child. Rest your hand on your heart and imagine holding yourself as a child. Be present with whatever is going on for yourself as a child. Offer love and presence, without trying to fix anything. Loving attention is incredibly healing and feels so good!
IE: share a ball of light and love between you and someone you love (this can be your child self too).

One of my beloved teachers, Christopher Wallis, says that it is actually the most self-less act to take care of ourselves, because when we take care of ourselves we can show up with more love, presence, and compassion for the world. This is such a good re-frame!
May all our self-care benefit all beings.
"It's time to love the body you live in."
